caused no anxiety, but the nurse noticing a sudden change in the patient's appearance, sent for the Resident, Dr Kerr, who, recognising the serious condition, summoned me by telephone. When I saw the patient at 5 p.m. she was collapsed, ashy grey in appearance, and covered with cold, clammy sweat; pulse 128. P.V. cervix barely admitted two fingers, membranes unruptured, slight uterine haemorrhage, but nothing suggesting placenta praevia. The abdomen seemed unusually large, tense, and hard in consistence, and the patient complained of severe pain over the left side of the abdomen. No foetal parts
